Perplexity’s AI-powered browser, Comet, was initially available only to high-priced subscribers this summer. However, the AI-powered browser is now available for free to everyone. The company positions the product as a strong competitor to Google Chrome with the slogan “The internet is better with Comet” and promises that the browser will remain free indefinitely.
Perplexity Announces Comet, Its AI-Powered Browser
Comet, the next-generation AI browser, has been unveiled. The system, developed by Perplexity, could rival Chrome. Comet puts AI at the heart of the browsing experience. Instead of simply integrating a search engine into the browser, Perplexity emphasizes that it offers a personal AI assistant that navigates the web alongside the user. This aims to simplify internet use and simplify tasks like shopping, travel booking, and daily life management.
The browser was launched in July 2025 but was initially only available to Perplexity Max subscribers, who paid $200 per month. Access was later expanded to select Pro plan users and invitees. Starting today, Comet requires no subscription.
The company also announced a new subscription package in August called Comet Plus. This service, which CEO Aravind Srinivas likened to Apple News Plus, provides access to select news publications. Launch partners include CNN, Condé Nast, Fortune, Le Figaro, Le Monde, The Los Angeles Times, and The Washington Post. Comet Plus is included with Pro and Max subscriptions and is available for $5 per month for other users.
Perplexity isn’t the only player bringing AI to the internet. Google has integrated Gemini into Chrome, The Browser Company, maker of the Arc browser, is focusing on Dia, and Opera has launched its AI-powered browser, Neon.
